Day 4: Behind The Scenes

Welcome back to November’s Healthy Mind Power Week: Today is Day 4! 7 days of short inspirational reads to get your day (and month) off to a great start! Today let’s talk about the dangers of comparing our lives to others.

“The reason why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.” – Stephen Furtick

There are days where I have to switch off all my social media, because I find myself comparing my life in an unhealthy way to what I am seeing online. I have to stop my mind for a moment and remember how carefully I construct my own online image. Just as Stephen Furtick suggests; I am only showing a highlight reel. I am not uploading images of me crying, feeling sad, or sitting alone watching the Simpsons (which is my happy place by the way). No one is, there is only an array of gorgeous travel photos, carefully edited selfies and good times.

We need to avoid comparing ourselves to what we see online, and allowing that to affect our mood negatively. We cannot control what other people post, we can only control our attitude towards it.

The Challenge

Today, I challenge you to become aware if you are comparing your life to someone else in a negative way, online or offline. I challenge you instead to compare yourself to someone less fortunate then you. In this way, we are able to put things back in perspective, and notice what we DO have in our own lives, and show gratitude for it. The roof over our head, the food we have to eat, the clothes on our back and our eyes that allow us to see this wondrous world.

Have a fantastic 4th day of the month and I’ll see you back here tomorrow for Day 5 of Healthy Mind Power Week! Don’t forget to subscribe with your email, and I would love to hear from you in the comment section below.
