Today I’d like to focus on how important it is to make time for joy in your life, as an essential part of your self care routine.
“When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.”
– Jean Shinoda Bolen
It is easy to get lost in the flow of life. Wake up, drink coffee, commute to work, sit at desk, commute home, eat dinner, bathe children, watch Netflix and collapse into bed. To repeat it all again.
When you look back through your memories, what stands out? Most likely it is great joy or great sadness. Any strong emotion. Our day To day experiences tend to fade and disappear.
I received a 5 year diary as a gift a few years ago and am so grateful for the occasions I’ve remembered to write in it, as when I read it back the following year, I am taken back to the joy of that date in prior years.
Having something like this diary, encourages me to do something each day that is joyful and memorable. No matter how big or small.
The Challenge
Today, I challenge you to begin a practice like this. Whether it’s a line a day in a specific journal, or on your calendar.
Look back through your day and find that moment of joy that happened, whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea, binge watching Friends with your spouse, or a brilliant conversation with a colleague.
Take the time to make sure you bring joy to your life. These are the moments that matter and by taking a small amount of time to do something that brings you happiness. You are creating moments of self care for your soul.
