Lets dive right in:

Happiness through Meditation

I’m sure you have heard of the mindfulness and meditation “fad”, and if you commonly read my articles, I frequently refer to the benefits of mindfulness and meditating. How the habit of a few minutes of meditation each day can lead to a more positive and successful life. Specifically today, we are discussing meditation as a way to increase happiness.

Studies have show that through meditation we are able to more readily control our reactions to external factors rather than behaving and responding habitually or on auto-pilot. The habit of meditation can literally change the brain.

One study said: “our findings shed light on the effect of meditation on an individual’s mental well-being, and indicate that it may be a means of improving both emotion regulation and self-motivation by modulating resting-state Functional Connectivity in emotion and motivation-related brain regions.”

In short, people with high life satisfaction and happiness show greater neural connectivity. Meditating daily can help build stronger neural connections and increase happiness.

The Challenge

Today I challenge you to begin a meditation habit. To intentionally take at least 5 – 10 minutes each day to pause and meditate. I personally love the Calm App, however I have heard great reviews about Headspace as well. These tools are excellent if you prefer a guided meditation. Both Apps have a free version so you can trial them to see which one suits your needs the best. Remember it takes 28 days to form a habit. Be sure to set a reminder or make a note in your diary each day, so you don’t forget.

If you prefer a more practical meditation practice, check out this book by Gaia. It will show you how to bring simple 5- and 10-minute practices into your day in order to free yourself from stress and, ultimately, find more peace in your life. Begin to control your thoughts and reactions to allow yourself to feel more joy today.
